Jimmy Lai, a media tycoon in Hong Kong, has had his assets frozen by the Hong Kong government.


The Security Bureau of Hong Kong announced on Friday that it had frozen properties belonging to imprisoned media tycoon Jimmy Lai Chee-ying, marking the first use of seizing powers given to officials under the national security law.

Per a government statement issued on behalf of the Security Bureau, the properties was for all of Lai’s shares in Next Digital Limited as well as land in the local bank accounts of three companies owned by him.

Lai was convicted to 14 months in jail for participating in unauthorized gatherings amid mass pro-democracy demonstrations in 2019.
