A health care firm recognized for catering to millennial guys expands its product portfolio and gains new customers.

Dinah Chamberlain, 39, was looking for at-home Covid-19 testing the week before Christmas, as were many other New Yorkers. She was going to visit her folks in Wisconsin and wanted to test on a regular basis while she was there.

“I heard that one pharmacy near me in Williamsburg had them. I called them, and they said they only had five left,” she said. “I ran over there to watch the person in front of me buy the last one.”

Soon after, she spotted an Instagram post from a local news site in her Brooklyn area stating that Roman, a health care provider renowned for catering to guys, had tests in store and could provide them to consumers within two days.

The start-up, situated in New York City, was started in October 2017 as a digital men’s health clinic. It’s a facility where guys, particularly millennials who are the target demographic for witty subway ad campaigns, may seek treatment for ailments including hair loss, erectile dysfunction, and premature ejaculation. Furthermore, no in-person doctor’s visit is required; everything may be completed electronically.

Ms. Chamberlain, a men’s apparel designer, had heard about the brand through subway and television advertisements, but she never expected to become a customer.

That is, until now. She had the tests sent to Wisconsin right away.

“It’s funny that in an emergency situation I am turning to an erectile dysfunction company,” she said. “I mean, good for them for having them when no one else did.”

Since its founding, Roman, now known as Ro, the umbrella corporate name, has expanded beyond aiding men with difficulties they wish to solve quietly.

Zero, a virtual, medical program to assist individuals to quit smoking, was founded a year after the company’s founding. Within three years, it developed Rory, the women’s version of Roman, with services such as skincare and sexual wellness treatments, as well as Ro Pharmacy, an online pharmacy that provides over 1,000 generic medicines throughout the United States.

It currently owns Modern Fertility, a reproductive health clinic; Kit, an at-home diagnostic testing firm; and Ro Mind, a mental health facility that treats anxiety and depression.

Clients range in age and have a wide range of medical demands, according to Ro. “People may be more acquainted with us because of where we started, but when we look at our statistics, the bulk of our patients are signing up for anything other than E.D.,” one of the co-founders, Zachariah Reitano, said. But it wasn’t until the firm began offering at-home Covid tests in November that many consumers realized the company was more than just a method to purchase generic Viagra “from the comfort of their own homes.”

People who would never have considered visiting the company’s website are now ardent clients. They’re talking about Roman and Ro on social media, which is free, organic promotion for the brand.

Mr. Reitano described it as a rare gift for health-care organizations. “It’s unusual that people have such a terrific health care experience that they want to talk about it on social media,” he said.

Evan Hoffman, 42, a software developer from Bellmore, Long Island, discovered the speedy Covid testing on Ro’s website and tweeted about it. “I saw several folks on Twitter, blue check mark people, whining about not being able to find a test, so I gave them an ad and said, ‘Go get this thing.'” ‘They have everything in stock,’ he explained.

He was aware of the company’s illustrious history. “In my thoughts, Roman represents the Viagra firm,” he explained. His suspicions were reinforced when, after purchasing the Covid tests, he began receiving advertisements for various erectile dysfunction medications. “I’m like, ‘no, God, no,'” he said. “I need to click on something else to get Instagram to stop delivering these.”

Nonetheless, he made a post about the organization. He felt it was more vital to spread the word about where to get Covid testing than to be concerned about the possibility of shame. “It was as if I had unearthed a gem in the rough that no one else had discovered,” he remarked.

Mr. Hoffman has not purchased anything else from the website, but he is considering it for the first time. “I think I could understand utilizing their pharmacy if I needed a pharmaceutical refill and they had a really excellent pricing,” he added. “I’d also be open to other types of testing, such as if they marketed strep tests or whatever.”

He went on to say that the experience had taught him to appreciate the organization. “It provided them credibility that they were offering genuine Covid-19 items at a reasonable price and could deliver them on schedule,” he added.

Concerning the real tests: Ro offers On/Go brand Covid-19 tests for $30 for a pack of two. This is more pricey than similar items elsewhere. Most pharmacies, for example, charge $24 for two BinaxNOW Covid-19 Antigen Self Tests. The corporation insists on charging that amount. “Because of the cost of the test as well as the free two-day shipping, we don’t earn a profit when someone buys a single test,” Mr. Reitano explained.

Ms. Chamberlain stated that purchasing Covid-19 testing did not fully affect her opinion of the firm. “Roman is still more for guys in my head,” she explained. But she likes the firm since they were able to get her testing while CVS and Walgreens couldn’t. “I think they were obviously wise to have these because there is such a high demand,” she remarked.

Ro said that it has been working since January 2021 to ensure that it had Covid tests in stock since that is when consumers began requesting them. It hasn’t been an easy road. (For example, one of its early collaborators has failed to receive Food and Drug Administration approval for its testing.) “We’ve continued to invest even when instances rose and fell,” Mr. Reitano added. “We sustained our investment because we know that if there is an increase in cases, if there are other varieties, we are prepared, and we have plenty in store.”

Ro, for example, has three pharmacy distribution sites around the country at the start of the year. It now has ten employees, allowing it to supply things fast. Only time will tell if the firm can meet demand for its Covid-19 testing while other companies struggle.

But, for the time being, it is evident that it has a fashionable product that people are excited to speak about. Eric Goldie, 31, a full-time real estate agent in New York City who is also a social media influencer, has been tapped by Roman for digital advertising. He stated that when he initially learned that Roman was offering at-home Covid testing, he contacted Roman’s social media firm and wanted to be a part of advertising the product.

He anticipates a different reaction from his audience when he posts about at-home tests as opposed to medication for premature ejaculation.

“What is someone going to troll you about with a Covid-19 test?” he said.
